Halo XL450

Field Score   8.56 out of 10

Maximum of 450 yards to reflective target

6x magnification

Ai Technology accounts for slope to the target

Precise to +/- 1 yard

Water resistant

Hunter Quick Review:  The Halo X450 is a decent entry level rangefinder, especially considering a price of around $90.

At 6x magnification it gives the user plenty of power to view distant targets and out to about 250 yards it does a pretty good job at zeroing in and producing range data. The X450 seems to be fairly accurate within a yard or two.

The Halo X450 also has a built in altitude slope adjustment which is nice. The build is adequate, and it does seem to fit nicely in the user's hand.

We feel that the Halo would perform admirably as a rangefinder for the bow hunter and the Eastern Whitetail hunter, but would have limited application for the western rifle hunter past 200 yards. Please remember, this is a very inexpensive, entry level rangefinder. Please do not expect the Halo to perform like the more expensive rangefinders. We have included the Halo X450 in our listing of best rated products because for the price it does an adequate job and would be ideal for the bow hunter or Whitetail hunter on a budget.

Simmons 801600 Volt 600 Laser Rangefinder, Black

4 X 20mm Vertical Rangefinder

10-yard-600-yard Range

+/-1-yard Accuracy

1-button Operation

Measures In Yards Or Meters

Hunter Quick Review:  The Simmons Volt 600 is another decent entry level rangefinder best suited for the bow hunter or close in Eastern Whitetail hunter. It comes with a 4x magnification and a 600 yard reflective range. In real world terms, however, this means without a high reflectivity of a target object the Volt 600 works adequately on range-finding game sized animals with lower reflectivity and without too much brush interference realistically out to about 200-250 yards.

Accurate distance measurement seems good. It is fairly simple and straightforward to operate.

This is an ideal bowhunting/Whitetail hunting rangefinder for the value minded hunter.

Leupold 120464 RX-650 Micro Laser Rangefinder, Black

Field Score   8.92 out of 10

Made using the highest quality materials

Perfect for hunting both East and West

Bowhunter of rifle hunter

650+ yard range

Tested for durability

Designed to be waterproof

Hunter Quick Review:  The Leupold RX 650 doesn't disappoint. It has a nice, compact design. The laser works well beyond 650 yards and is very accurate. Optical quality is adequate and will work well in most hunting situations. The RX 650 does have a durable feel and the workmanship is on par with most quality Leupold products.

On deer sized targets under hunting type conditions the rangefinder works consistently out to about 500 yards. This would put the RX 650 in a decent all around hunting rangefinder category and priced right at around the $150 range. For this kind of money this is a pretty good deal and most hunters who have used the RX 650 n the field seemed fairly happy with their purchase.

Single button operation of the ACULON rangefinder is fast and simple to use

Programmed to display the range of the furthest target among a group of targets measured

Made with multilayer coatings to provide an even higher light transmittance across the entire visible light spectrum

Water Resistant

Hunter Quick Review:  We really like this rangefinder for the money. At less than $150 the Nikon Aculon AL11 is a definite stand out.

This is a truly compact rangefinder that is easily stowed away in a jacket, gear bag, or shirt pocket. The design is better than expected in this price range and doesn't appear or feel cheap as some other rangefinder in this price range can. Optical qualities are good, the laser works well, the AL11 seems to be very accurate in its distance measurements.

This is probably one of the better deals you are going to find in rangefinders in the Performance Class arena. Hunting range limits seem to be around 700 plus yards - not bad for a rangefinder this small and this inexpensive.

Laser rangefinder

Hunter Quick Review:  This is an inexpensive Performance Class laser rangefinder that is not much more in price than the Ultimate Value models. The WGI Halo Xray Z6x comes in at roughly $120. We would rate this a good value for the money because its price point for what you get is just a super deal.

Optical qualities are decent, scan mode is quick and decisive, range measurements are dead on. It is very compact, has a nice rubberized housing, and it has the look and feel of a life-long rangefinder.

Bushnell 202442 The Truth ARC 4x20mm Bowhunting Laser Rangefinder with Clear Shot

Field Score   9.08 out of 10

Quality optics with stunning HD clarity

100 percent quality materials used and tested extensively

Beautiful design and durability built to last

Exclusive ClearShot technology gives instantaneous feedback on your shot clearance

Pocket-size ergonomic design; anti-slip finish

4x magnification Bow Mode provides true horizontal distance from 7-199 yards

Rainproof; carrying case, battery and neck strap included

Range: 7-850 yards; Angle range: -90 degrees to 90 degrees

Hunter Quick Review:  This is a great rangefinder from Bushnell that won't break the bank too bad at $185, thereabouts. Lots of nice features, good design, good target animal sensitivity, and good optical quality.

The Truth ARC is touted as a bowhunting rangefinder, but it will do better than that and would be a good choice for those gun hunters hunting the hardwoods Back East or the Texas Brush Country as well. We really like the finish as it is very easy to grip even when wet.

We would have scored this a little higher because it is a real quality rangefinder, but the unit has a learning curve to operate it. Make sure you read the instructions carefully. It would not be a bad idea for you to bring the instruction into the field until you get the hang of working the buttons - a little complicated for some.

Nikon Prostaff 3I Rifle Range Finder

Field Score   9.16 out of 10

Nikon's advanced ID Technology provides the horizontal distance to the target, even when ranging at various incline or decline shooting angles

The large 18mm ocular provides a faster view

The PROSTAFF 3i Rangefinder conveniently fits in a pocket or a pack

Hunter Quick Review:  The Nikon Prostaff 3i is a sleeper and we are surprised it is not more popular. The Optics are very clear, the accuracy is right on, the build is solid, and the price for this much quality is only about $170.

The Prostaff 3i does seem to have faster target acquisition than many other rangefinders, probably due to the larger ocular size. We think this would be a nice unit for Whitetail hunters needing quick reaction times.

Vortex Optics Ranger 1000 with Horizontal Component Distance Rangefinder RRF-101

Field Score   9.68 out of 10

Rubber-armored coating

Fully multi-coated lenses are anti-reflective and provide a brighter view

O-ring seals prevent moisture, dust and debris - waterproof performance

Rugged design is built to handle tough situations - compact and lightweight

Rubber armor provides a secure, non-slip grip

Diopter adjusts for precise Focus

Hunter Quick Review:  If you are a really serious hunter, you hunt more than the average hunting enthusiast, and you are willing to put out something around $300, then this is probably the direction you want to go. Why? The Vortex Ranger 1000, for all intents and purposes, is a top-end professional grade rangefinder with a top-end performance class price. For the money you put out, you just can't beat what you get.

The first thing you will notice is how sturdy this rangefinder is: just solid as can be; it feels like you can drop the thing without giving a second thought of worry as to actually damaging it (we don't recommend it though). Next you will notice the superior manufacturing of the product, this thing is built right, looks good, and has been well thought out. You will then try it out and find that the optical quality of the Ranger 1000 is just excellent, crisp, bright, and clear as a bell.

Then, to top it off you will read through the Vortex literature and find that your new Ranger 1000, as with all Vortex products, comes with a lifetime, no questions asked, unconditional warranty. If you actually ever talk to Customer Service at Vortex (rarely needed) you will be more than impressed.

So, do we sound like Vortex Ranger 1000 fans? We absolutely are.

The only thing we don't like is the triple tap to range - a little psychologically cumbersome since we are all pretty much geared for 2 taps. Other than that, probably one of the best RFs for the money.

Leupold RX-1200i TBR/W with DNA Laser Rangefinder Mossy Oak Break-Up Infinity OLED Selectable

Field Score   9.68 out of 10

Excellent Quality Optic

Easy to Use Functions

DNA Laser Rangefinder

Hunter Quick Review:  Here is a rangefinder that can compete with the Vortex Ranger 1000 at this price level: It is the very excellent Leupold RX 1200.

Well designed, well thought out, and superb optical quality, the RX 1200 is simply top of the line.

In a direct head to head between the Vortex 1000 and the Leupold RX 1200 this is how we would sum it up:

Both the Leupold and the Vortex are neck and neck as far as optical quality. Both range equally fast in practical use.

The Leupold RX 1200 is easier to use, in our opinion. The Leupold has a really cool downloadable BDC feature which gives you bullet drop compensation data for the cartridge you shoot, a really useful feature that the Ranger 1000 does not have. We think the Leupold is more aesthetically pleasing with a nice exterior camo option.

The Vortex on the other hand is built better, in our opinion, and built to be sealed and totally waterproof. The Leupold is well sealed, but does not have that level of weatherproofing. The Vortex comes with an unconditional lifetime warranty that is proven; Leupold does not have a warranty as solid as the Vortex.

Ultimately, for us, it is a toss up. We would take both rangefinders anywhere.

At the same time we owe our customers our real-world recommendation...so here goes: if you hunt in very tough, rugged conditions; you pack in backcountry; you hunt in wet weather and adverse conditions all of which really put your optic at risk - go with the Vortex Ranger 1000. If you hunt hard but less adverse; do a lot of bench rest type shooting; hunt open country or expansive agricultural fields much of the time - go with the Leupold RX 1200.

Hunter Quick Review:  This is a fabulous rangefinder. It's not quite as ruggedly designed as the Vortex Ranger 1000 or the Leupold RX 1200, but boy does it range!

Wow!

Extremely accurate, excellent internal display, optical brilliance, and amazing low light functions, this could be one of the best rangefinder platforms ever produced as far as we are concerned.

In regards to hunting, it really does have its own special place, especially out underneath the skies out West. The Kilo 2000 is capable of ranging deer sized animals out to 1200 yards with incredible accuracy. The Kilo 2000 is perfect for the hunter pursuing Mule Deer, Rocky Mountain Elk, Pronghorn, Bighorn Sheep, predators, etc.; anywhere long shots and extreme accuracy are needed.

Hunter Quick Review:  Ok, so let's say you are pretty well funded and want to go hard-core ranging...?

The Bushnell Elite Con-x is pretty much at the apex of the range finding world. This ranger has tons of bells and whistles, incredible accuracy, wireless communication from laser rangefinder to smart phone, bullet drop rifle mode in MOA or Mils, etc., etc.

And this RF isn't just pretty to look at. It is built very well. The Con-X is completely waterproof, has specially coated optics, rain guard HD, and it has a solid diopter adjustment.

This unit is already the darling of the long range shooting crowd. Our guess is it won't be long until the long range hunt crowd figures out what this thing can really do in the field. And for just over $400 it is a heck of deal.
