Long Eye Relief

Fast-Focus Eyepiece

Fully Multi-Coated Lenses

Resettable MOA Turrets

Hard Anodized Single-Piece Aircraft-Grade Aluminum Tube

Nitrogen Purged O-Ring Sealed For Waterproof/Fogproof Performance

Hunter Quick Review:  When you are on a budget but still want a hunting riflescope that gives you top performance in the field, look no further than the Vortex Crossfire 2 3x9x40mm. Priced in the mid $150 arena, this scope has a hard time being beat as a plex reticle, field-grade riflescope, pound for pound, dollar for dollar. Vortex has taken the hunting world by storm the last few years because they produce very good quality optics at very reasonable prices, not to mention an outstanding warranty program and superb customer service that goes with every single Vortex purchase. The Crossfire 2 is just another great Vortex product that gives you more than what you pay for.

The Crossfire 2 3x9x40 is a real world hunting riflescope. No frills, no real bells and whistles (except for the resettable turrets - nice feature), and yet we would not hesitate to take this scope into the most challenging hunting scenario with the utmost confidence it would perform as needed. The optical clarity out to 200 yards and beyond is outstanding for this price range; the design is super solid and looks to be capable of performing for a lifetime; light transmission is better than average; and eye relief is comfortable.

The single piece body in a 1 inch tube is a sure bet for durability. Well placed o-ring seals and nitrogen purging provide a properly weather proofed riflescope you can use no matter the conditions. Field of view exceeds expectations, and is more than adequate for any hunting situation you might encounter.

The few small issues we have ran across on the Crossfire 2 is with the "feel" of the turrets when turning them (probably more of a personal thing) and some minor, minor loss of clarity past 7x magnification, something even a high dollar scope will often have issues with. The turrets do have a softer feel when turned and it is hard to hear the "clicks" when sighting in, not a big deal really. But with that said, the Crossfire 2 zeros in nicely and consistently holds that zero from then on.

All in all, this is one of the top riflescopes we are aware of in this price range - hands down. A scope of this quality would normally sell for 2-3 times as much. Thus, the Vortex Crossfire 2 3x9x40 is truly a great deal for the money and more than worthy of being placed on any modern hunting firearm you own.

 Ultimate Value Categorynikon-pro-staff-3x9x40.jpg

Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40

Field Score  9.32 out of 10

  • Compact riflescope with 3 to 9x magnification
  • Aluminum body for lightweight strength
  • Multicoated optics transmits up to 98 percent of available light
  • Zero-reset turret with spring-loaded adjustment knob
  • 3.6 inches of eye relief
  • Nitrogen-filled, O-ring-sealed housing for waterproof, fogproof performance
  • BDC reticle
  • Quick-focus eyepiece
  • Measures 12.4 inches

Hunter Quick Review:  Nikon has been producing super quality hunting scopes the past few years, and the Nikon Prostaff is no exception. For the more budget minded, this is an excellent choice.

The Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40, although considered a higher end entry level scope, in many ways out performs this category. In actual on the ground hunting the Nikon Prostaff is up there with the standard greats like Leupold, Redfield, and Weaver.

Our first impressions on the Nikon Prostaff is that General Patton would be pleased - this rifle scope is built like a tank. The look is thick and beefy, ready to handle whatever is thrown at it; and yet, it is surprisingly lightweight for all the armor-like qualities. Along with the perception of premium durability, there is absolutely nothing timid in the rest of the Prostaff design. This is a very "American" looking rifle scope (yes, I know, it's an import), and probably not for those use to a more elegant European look and feel. For some reason it just looks right at home sitting atop a Remington 700 in 7mm mag with an elk hunting camp in the background (goosebumps).

The Prostaff functions as it should, and then some. It's not necessarily as smooth as silk, but everything moves tight and sure, no slop or hesitation anywhere.

In regards to its optical qualities, we are very impressed for a scope in this price category. The glass is very clear and crisp, the brightness is keen, and the reticle is fine yet brilliant. Eye relief comes in at around 3.6 inches, plenty of room to shoot without pause, and the field of view is as good or better than most other scopes in this price range.

We really have no issues with the Prostaff itself, it's a great overall scope. We would like to see Nikon define their limited warranty a little better. On the other hand, we doubt you will ever need a warranty with the Prostaff.

The Nikon Prostaff is simply one of the best value level scopes out there. In reality, as it pertains to actual hunting optic quality, it is a toss up between the Vortex Crossfire 2 and the Nikon Prostaff: we'd give the Nikon a micro edge over the Crossover 2 on overall quality (and we mean micro); we'd give the Crossover 2 a thumbs up over the Prostaff on warranty and customer service.

The Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40mm rifle scope is an amazing feat of modern engineering that can be had for less than $200.

  • Guaranteed by the Burris Forever Warranty

Hunter Quick Review:  Burris Fullfield E1 3x9x40 is simply an amazing all around riflescope for the money. It is featured in our rifle scopes for many, many field proven reasons - from our own field experience, and the field experience of many others. For a perfect, well rounded 3x9 hunting scope in the mid-range, performance class  price category, this is about as good as you are going to find at a very, very reasonable price.

Getting to the bottomline: put this 3x9 on any modern hunting rifle and you will have a deadly accurate hunting tool with superior optical clarity compared to the majority of commercial rifle scopes.

The Burris Fullfield 3x9x40mm uses a state-of-the-art reticle which allows you to make accurate shots out to 500 yards, and the windage and elevation dots give you the ability to make perfect shot placement even in windy conditions. Optical glass is precision ground giving a clarity only found in higher priced rifle scopes. Multi-coated lenses give very good glare resistance and very good efficiency for low light gathering as is common in pre-sunrise and post-sunset hunting conditions.

The profile on the Burris Fullfield E1 3x9x40mm has a slender feel, not over bulky, and mates well with a good bolt action hunting rifle or AR platform. The windage and elevation knobs are placed properly, easy to use on the bench or in the woods. The Burris FF E1 has a unique, well thought out separation of power ring and eyepiece which makes putting on a flip up cap no problem (nice going Burris engineering!). The tube is one piece, built well, and capable of taking some pretty good abuse and still keep you on target. Internals are 'double spring-tensioned" which helps with shockproofing; again, a well thought out engineering feature for a riflescope capable of giving the user a lifetime of use.

Best of all the Burris Fullfield E1 comes with a Burris Forever Warranty. Sure, the Burris is incredibly resistant to whatever you might dish out in heavy recoil, shooting vibration, and the toughest field use; but it is nice to know that Burris still has your back if something goes wrong.

The only possible concerns we might have come across with The Burris FF E1 (and they are of a minimal concern) is in moisture resistance. For almost all hunting scenarios with rain, snow, fog etc. the Burris FF E1 holds up far better than need be (we know this firsthand because we have personally hunted with Burris Fullfields from West Virginia to Arizona with no issues whatsoever), but a few scopes out there have exhibited some very slight internal condensation under super saturation situations. If there ever is a an issue, Burris is a great company to work with and they have a great warranty program

In conclusion, The Burris Fullfield E1 3x9x40 is a fantastic hunting scope for the money. This riflescope has the optical quality of some of the very best scopes out there, and yet it comes in at the mid $200 mark - amazing! Brass tacks, it is one of our absolute favorites on the list. So much so, one will be traveling far and wide out West with us (by our choice) this coming fall season sitting nicely on a Remington 700.

Performance Classnikon-monarch3-3-12x42-on-rifle.png

Nikon Monarch 3 3x12x42mm BDC

Field Score  9.48 out of 10

  • Nikoplex Reticle
  • Spring Loaded Zero-Reset Turrets
  • Interchangeable Turret Technology
  • Spot On Ballistic Match Technology
  • Ultra ClearCoat™ optical system
  • Hand-turn 1/4 MOA windage and elevation adjustments
  • Rugged, one piece body tubes
  • Full Lifetime Warranty
  • Enhanced mount ring spacing
  • MONARCH 3 Eyebox Technology
  • Smooth zoom control
  • Waterproof/Fogproof

Hunter Quick Review:  OK folks, you HAVE to take a look at this riflescope.

The Nikon Monarch 3 is an exceptionally good hunting scope made by a company that has been a household name for making quality lenses and optics for decades. Most are familiar with Nikon as a top camera company, but recently Nikon has been making major moves in the hunting world with their introduction of some really well designed riflescopes.

The Nikon Monarch 3 3x12x42 is constructed like a much higher-end riflescope. It has a rugged one-piece aluminum body made to keep operating in the field under the most difficult conditions. The 42 mm objective transmits light very well and edges out most scopes in the common 40mm objective range. Optical clarity is very, very good. Brightness is good and consistent through even the higher magnification range.

For innovation, the Nikon Monarch 3 comes with a unique side focus feature which allows the shooter to adjust the parallex without having to fool with trying to turn the front of the scope. Adjusting the focus takes place where there is a 3rd turret on the scope and is nothing but smooth and easy (nice engineering Nikon).

We absolutely love the MONARCH 3 Eyebox Technology. Consistent eye relief at the perfect eye to eyepiece distance is such an important part of using a riflescope comfortably, especially in quick reaction hunting situations or when shooting extended benchrest for an afternoon. The eye relief on the Nikon Monarch 3 is greater than most scopes coming in at around 4 inches, and stays at the 4 inch mark throughout the magnification band from 3x to 12x. This consistent 4 inch eye relief allows for plenty of room to shoot the bigger caliber rifles without worrying about painful "scope ring" eye. This is also a tremendous feature when teaching younger shooters or new shooters to shoot high caliber rifles without ruining them off the start with flinching issues.

Reticle is a BDC bubble set up which allows the shooter more precise bullet drop compensation aiming at greater distances. We like the BDC bubbles for hunting over the standard plex/crosshair reticles, especially when shooting at game over 200 yards. Less guesswork means more specific shot placement.

Another really cool feature is the shooting software Nikon makes available for free for its riflescopes. Nikon's website has "Spot On" Ballistic Match Technology software that matches your riflescope and reticle to virtually any ammunition currently available. In essence, Nikon's Spot On shows you all the shot possibilities of your particular caliber before you pull the trigger - pretty neat! With an expansive database Spot On provides you with the precise aiming points at your specified range for any Nikon BDC reticle riflescope and instant reference for sighting in other Nikon riflescopes with plex, mildot or standard crosshair reticles. Again, very cool.

In conclusion, the Nikon Monarch 3 3x12x42 is one of the best hunting or shooting riflescopes out there, perfect as an all around riflescope that can deliver on just about any game animal at any reasonable hunting distance. Don't let the fact that Nikon is originally a camera manufacturer deter you - Nikon has brought to the table a premiere hunting scope that comes in at just a little over $300.

Performance Classzeiss-terra-3x9x42.png

Zeiss Terra 3x9x42 Plex Reticle

Field Score  9.56 out of 10

  • Matte anodized
  • Lightweight & waterproof housing
  • Plex reticle
  • Multi coated lenses
  • European design
  • Aluminum turret caps
  • Rugged, compact design

Hunter Quick Review:  Clarity, Clarity, Clarity! When it comes to superior glass at a reasonable price, this is where the Zeiss Terra shines.

The Zeiss Terra 3x9x42mm is considered an entry level riflescope according to Zeiss standards. However, the more than reasonable price point and the overall great quality exhibits more of a higher, mid-range riflescope; so the Zeiss Terra is nothing similar to a pre-packaged, consumer type, entry level riflescope you would find in a big box hunting department...not hardly.

So, let's cut to the chase.

If light transmission is an issue where you hunt, like in deep woods, pre dusk/dawn scenarios, predominantly overcast and rainy climate, etc., and you need every ounce of light you can get, the Zeiss Terra is exactly what you are looking for.

When stacked up against other scopes and their light gathering ability, the Zeiss Terra is in a class of its own. Zeiss has put much of their R&D into perfecting optical lens performance in their high end optics, and this is quite literally what they are known for. Well, those many years spent perfecting their lenses has now trickled down to their less expensive models and the light gathering performance on the Zeiss Terra is remarkable!

And the rest of the scope is every bit as good. A very tight, yet aesthetically pleasing matte, anodized body surrounds and protects the internals. The 1 inch tube is strong, yet light. The turrets have a unique look and function with ease and have a feel that is very top dollar like you find on very expensive riflescopes. The eyepiece and power ring, again, has a very rich feel, and performs flawlessly.

On the bench, the Zeiss Terra is as clear as a bell and one of the best "fine definition" scopes there is. In the woods, the Zeiss Terra is capable of picking out the tiniest detail in your hunt picture which makes it perfect for thicker country hunting where picking very precise shots through tangle becomes critical, or in wide country hunting where precise shot placement at extended ranges comes into play.

The only small issues we have with the Zeiss Terra is in the turrets - no numbers, unless Zeiss has changed this very recently. For some of us we like to have numbers on the turret to use numerical data when we shoot, especially off the bench. Sure, traditional European design is great and very eye pleasing, but Yankee hunters here in North America usually appreciate function over aesthetics; we like our numbers on the turret.

All in all, The Zeiss Terra is an incredibly capable rifle scope, especially in low light hunting conditions. And when it comes to light gathering and brightness, the Terra outperforms anything in its price range of under $300.
